Matsumoto Station building, the rail change point on the way from Osaka to Hakuba

Osaka to Hakuba: Matsumoto, Nagano or the night bus.

Getting there · winter 2026–27 · checked 11 Oct 2026

There is no shinkansen to Hakuba, and from Osaka the Hokuriku line to Nagano is the long way round. The useful choices are the train through Nagoya and Matsumoto, an overnight ski bus that drops you at the lifts at dawn, or a day bus to Matsumoto and the local train. Fares and times below are from the operators and a December 2026 route search, with anything not yet published for 2026–27 labelled.

Best when

  • Train via Matsumoto: about five hours, about ¥13,230, no Nagano detour.
  • Night bus: you want to save a hotel night and ski the arrival day.
  • Day bus to Matsumoto: cheapest daytime option, if you have the time.

Skip when

  • Via Nagano unless you are stopping there, or going to see the snow monkeys.
  • The night bus with small kids who won't sleep sitting up.
  • Kansai Airport straight to Hakuba if you land after early afternoon.

My pick

Personally I’d suggest the train via Matsumoto. It is the quickest door to door, the three legs are all JR, and the only weak link is the Oito Line, where you should time the Shinano so you don’t sit in Matsumoto for an hour. If you would rather sleep on the way, the JAMJAM night bus gets you to the Happo Bus Terminal at about 6:20, early enough for first chair.

Via Matsumoto. Nozomi from Shin-Osaka to Nagoya takes about 50 minutes; the Shinano to Matsumoto about 2 hours 5 minutes. Shin-Osaka to Matsumoto is ¥12,000 with reserved seats (¥6,400 fare, ¥3,070 Nozomi reserved, ¥2,530 Shinano reserved), or ¥11,130 unreserved. From Matsumoto, the JR Oito Line costs ¥1,230 and takes about 1 hour 40 minutes, usually with a change at Shinano-Omachi. On the Monday we checked in December, afternoon trains left Matsumoto at 14:11, 16:09 and 17:56. A sample day: Shin-Osaka 10:45, Nagoya 12:00 Shinano, Matsumoto 14:03, Oito Line 14:11, Hakuba 15:54.

Via Nagano, through Nagoya. Stay on the Shinano to Nagano (about 3 hours from Nagoya). Shin-Osaka to Nagano is ¥13,370 reserved (¥7,550 fare, ¥3,070 Nozomi, ¥2,750 Shinano). Then the Alpico express bus to Hakuba: ¥3,500 adult in winter and about an hour to the Happo Bus Terminal, the same fare to Hakuba Station, Goryu and Iwatake. More on that leg on getting to Hakuba.

Via Nagano, through Tsuruga. The Thunderbird to Tsuruga and the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano take 3 h 47 to 4 h 10 and cost ¥15,890 reserved, before the bus. It is the most expensive way and not faster to Hakuba. Use it only if you are joining from Kanazawa or Fukui.

Money-saver: Kintetsu’s Meihan limited express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nagoya takes about 2 h 15 and costs ¥4,790 with a reserved seat (¥2,860 fare + ¥1,930), against about 50 minutes on the Nozomi. Kintetsu-Nagoya is about a 9-minute walk from the JR station.

The SNOWLINER is a three-across overnight coach with a toilet. It also boards at Kobe Sannomiya (19:45) and stops at Hakuba 47, Wadano, Iwatake, Tsugaike and Hakuba Norikura. Book the evening before the day you want to arrive. The return, SL434, runs 12 Dec 2026 to 28 Mar 2027, leaving Happo Bus Terminal at 19:45 and reaching Umeda at about 6:45.

Alpico’s own Osaka–Hakuba bus came back last winter after a break. Its route page shows no service at the moment, so don’t plan around it until the 2026–27 dates appear. Alpico’s Matsumoto–Hakuba express bus also shows no service, which is why the Oito Line is the link from Matsumoto. There is an Osaka–Nagano overnight bus as well (¥4,500–7,600), useful only if you are going to Nagano first.

Driving from Osaka

It is a long expressway day: Alpico’s bus covers about 470 km from Osaka to Hakuba and is timetabled at 8 h 50 overnight. Rent with winter tyres, carry an International Driving Permit, and check your lodge’s parking before you go. All of that is on car hire in Hakuba.

From Kansai Airport

The Haruka runs from Kansai Airport to Shin-Osaka in about 54 minutes, and then it is the Matsumoto route. On the December day we checked, the 9:42 Haruka connected to Hakuba at 15:54, for ¥13,150 with unreserved shinkansen and Shinano seats. If you land later in the day, sleep in Osaka and send the ski bags ahead on takkyubin.

Once you are in the valley

The Oito Line drops you at JR Hakuba Station, not at a lift. Pick a base that matches how you arrive on where to stay, and if you won’t have a car, read Hakuba without a car before you book.
