Takkyubin is how you leave the ski bags behind and still look civilised on the train.
Takkyubin (宅急便) means door-to-door courier / luggage forwarding. The name most visitors meet is Yamato’s TA-Q-BIN (Kuroneko — the black cat). Japan Post’s Yu-Pack does the same job from post offices and some convenience stores. Best when
- Ski bags plus train changes or a Shinjuku highway-bus morning.
- Tokyo hotel → Hakuba lodge overnight — bags arrive after you do (or next day).

01 · Tokyo hotel → Hakuba lodge overnight
Land late, sleep Tokyo, hand bags to the front desk for Yamato (or send from a convenience-store counter). Ride the highway bus or rail + Alpico with a day bag. This is the grown-up plan on Get there when you miss the last shared van — and the reason Narita or Haneda still works with kids and jet lag.
02 · Airport counters, sometimes
Narita and Haneda have luggage-delivery counters in season. Useful if you are not staying in Tokyo first. Still overnight logic — do not expect the bag on your same-afternoon Alpico.
03 · Travel light on Alpico / shinkansen
Oversized ski bags on peak trains and buses are how people write angry trip reports. Forward the hard cases; keep passports, meds, and one warm layer with you.
Caveats — read before you pay
- Overnight timing. Normal Tokyo→Nagano deliveries are next-day or two-day, not same-bus. Plan a night in Tokyo or arrive after the bags.
- Size / weight limits. Yamato TA-Q-BIN accepts parcels up to 200 cm linear (L+W+H) and 30 kg (Size 60–200). Japan Post Yu-Pack is typically up to 170 cm and 25 kg (Weighted Yu-Pack up to 30 kg). Measure ski bags before you promise the desk.
- Lodge must accept delivery. Staffed hotels and lodges usually do. Unstaffed apartments often do not. Confirm the receiving address and phone number in English and Japanese if you can.
