Places we would actually go this winter — Happo, Echoland, Wadano, Goryu. Full menus and hours live on the restaurant — confirm before you go.

  • • Book ahead for small rooms and peak weeks — many popular spots fill early
  • • Most places close between lunch and dinner (typically 14:00–17:00)
  • • Cash is still common at family-run Japanese spots; cards more accepted at hotel and international restaurants
  • • No tipping in Japan — the price is the price

  • Nepalese–Indian comfort near Hokujo. Curry, naan, tandoor, adjustable heat. Their shop states all curries gluten-free (no wheat thickener). Spice adjustable; kids-friendly. Closed Thu, Wed irregular.

  • Vegetarian and vegan cafe on Happo, attached to Evergreen International Ski School. Local veg, organic when they can, fair-trade drinks. The useful on-hill lunch if your kids are in Yeti Club. Their website still has a 2020 closed banner, so don’t trust the hours — call 0261-85-0034.

  • Vegan ramen in Misorano. Hours aren’t current — confirm before you taxi out to Misorano. Still the name people give when you ask for vegan dinner that is not Roots Cafe.

    Chef Shingo Suzuki tasting-menu room in Echoland. Their website currently says COMING SOON with hours TBD. Last published season they did vegetarian and gluten-free with notice, a child portion, and said they cannot do vegan. Book via TableCheck when open — not a walk-in burger.

    Australian-run smash burgers, smoothie bowls, coffee, cocktails. Bali DNA, Echoland concrete and monsteras. Breakfast to late. Hours are 7am–late on their website — check the door for close time.

  • Koiya 鯉屋Happo 八方

    Sixty years at the foot of Happo. Unagi grilled on site, handmade nihachi soba, carp, rockfish. Five minutes from Happo Gondola. Japanese room, early last order. Do not arrive at 20:00.

  • Big Happo hall, about 100 seats, built around Yamabuki miso and fermentation. Dinner 5–9. Lunch times disagree across listings — call if you want lunch. Useful when you need a table that actually fits a family of five.

    Mediterranean room in Echoland: seasonal fresh pasta, Turkish pide, cocktails. Eight seats. They say they can do vegetarian. This is a reservation, not a walk-past.
