Best Hakuba
Snowy road through Hakuba village near Hakuba Station with the Northern Alps behind

In Hakuba, pick the village before the hotel.

Where to stay · Checked for 2026–27, 11 Oct 2026

“Hakuba” on a booking site means a whole valley: ten ski resorts and a handful of villages that feel nothing alike. A lodge in Echoland and a hotel in Otari can both say Hakuba and be a different holiday. Where you sleep decides whether you walk to dinner, which hill you ride without a car, and how long your kids sit on a bus. Below are the eight areas worth booking, what each one is good at, and a stay search for each so you land on the right part of the map.

Best when

  • Happo for a first trip without a car.
  • Echoland if dinner and a drink are half the point.
  • Wadano, Tsugaike or Iwatake with young kids.

Skip when

  • Booking “Hakuba” and working out the area later.
  • An Otari or Omachi listing when nobody in your group will drive on snow.
  • Hakuba Station if you want to walk to a lift.

My pick, by trip

Four trips, four villages. Here is where I’d book for each.

  1. 01 · First trip, no car: Happo

Personally I’d stay in Happo for a first trip without a car. You walk to the gondola and to The Pub, and most valley shuttles stop there for Goryu or Iwatake. If wind closes the Happo ridge, you are still in the right place to go somewhere else. More on which Hakuba mountains work without a car.

  2. 02 · Friends’ trip: Echoland

For a friends’ trip I’d suggest Echoland, and paying for it with a morning shuttle. Calico, Gogh and Hige Cafe are all on foot, and nobody has to drive home. Eating plant-based? Happo and Echoland are also where most of the vegan and vegetarian options in Hakuba are.

  3. 03 · Family with small kids: Wadano or Tsugaike

With small kids I’d pick Wadano if you want Iwatake or Happo’s Sakka slopes plus a real dinner, and Tsugaike if the kids club is there and you want zero commute. More on Hakuba with kids, and lessons on English ski schools in Hakuba.

  4. 04 · Powder week with a car: Goryu or Cortina

With a car and powder on your mind, I’d suggest Goryu: it puts Hakuba 47’s trees and night skiing on your doorstep. Or Cortina, the storm-day hill, where sleeping at the base means first chair without the drive. Tyres, 4WD and parking are on car hire in Hakuba.

Happo village 八方

No carNightlifePowderFirst-timers

First trip, no car, mixed groups. The walk-everywhere base under Happo-one, the 1998 Olympic hill.

Lifts
Walk to the Happo Gondola or the Nakiyama and Kokusai bases from most of the village. Most valley shuttle buses stop at Happo, and Happo Bus Terminal is the end of the Alpico bus from Nagano.
After dark
Lively by Hakuba standards: The Pub, sushi, pizza and izakaya within walking distance. Three day-use onsens in the village (Happo-no-Yu, Mimizuku-no-Yu, Sato-no-Yu).
Mountains
Happo-one

Best when You will not drive and want to walk to the lift and to dinner.

Skip when Your kids are first-day beginners who need a giant nursery slope. Happo’s upper mountain is not one.

Echoland エコーランド

No carNightlife

Couples and groups of friends who care about dinner and a drink as much as first chair.

Lifts
Most lodges are not on a lift. Plan on the valley shuttle or a walk over to the Happo side; check the map distance from your lodge before you book.
After dark
The valley’s night village: smash burgers, cocktails, kushikatsu, fresh pasta and an in-house coffee roaster, all on a few walkable streets.
Mountains
Happo-one, Iwatake

Best when You want to walk home from dinner and do not mind a shuttle in the morning.

Skip when You want ski-in, ski-out. Nothing here is.

Wadano 和田野

No carKidsQuiet

Families and couples who want Happo access without Happo-village noise.

Lifts
Parts of Wadano are a short walk from Happo’s Sakka slopes (The Rabbit Hole is 150 m from them). Iwatake’s gondola is a short walk or shuttle from Wadano hotels.
After dark
Quieter. Hotel restaurants and a few good rooms: Mimi’s for the trip dinner, Sève and Frank’s Bar at Hotel La Neige. Kurashita-no-Yu and Tenjin-no-Yu for a soak.
Mountains
Happo-one, Iwatake

Best when You have kids on Iwatake or Happo and want dinner without a taxi.

Skip when You want Echoland’s bar street on your doorstep every night.

Hakuba Station 白馬駅

Arriving by trainQuiet

Rail arrivals on the direct Azusa from Shinjuku, short stays and anyone who wants to reach every hill by bus rather than live on one.

Lifts
No lifts here. The direct Azusa trains from Shinjuku and the Alpico bus from Nagano both stop at Hakuba Station, then you ride the valley shuttle to the mountain each morning.
After dark
Quiet. A handful of local restaurants near the station, including charcoal yakiniku and handmade soba.
Mountains
Happo-one, Goryu

Best when You arrive on the JR line and value transport over atmosphere.

Skip when You want to walk to a lift. Every day starts with a bus.

Goryu and Kamishiro 五竜・神城

KidsFirst-timersPowderNight skiing

Families who want English group lessons, riders who want Hakuba 47’s trees, and anyone who wants night skiing out the door.

Lifts
Lodges near Escal Plaza walk to the Goryu base; GORYU Rentals is about 30 steps from the snow. Goryu links to Hakuba 47 on one ticket. The Alpico bus from Nagano stops at Goryu.
After dark
Night skiing at Goryu, then a thin dinner scene. NABURA in Kamishiro is the winter locals’ bar. Ryujin-no-Yu onsen is at Escal Plaza.
Eat nearby
NABURA. Plan a taxi or shuttle to Happo or Echoland for variety.
Mountains
Goryu, Hakuba 47

Best when Your days are Goryu and 47 and your kids are in Iimori group lessons.

Skip when Dinner out is the holiday. Goryu village is thin for that.

Iwatake 岩岳

KidsFirst-timersQuiet

Families with mixed abilities and first-timers who want wide, readable grooming off a gondola.

Lifts
Lodges near the base walk to the Iwatake gondola. From Happo village it is 15–20 minutes on the valley shuttle, not a walk.
After dark
Very quiet. Eat in your lodge or in Wadano next door; Happo and Echoland are a shuttle or taxi away.
Mountains
Iwatake

Best when Iwatake is your family hill and early nights suit everyone.

Skip when You are chasing steeps or powder. Happo, 47 and Cortina hold that.

Tsugaike Kogen 栂池高原

KidsFirst-timersQuiet

Young families and true beginners. A giant learning area at the north end of the valley, with Evergreen’s second base.

Lifts
Stay here and walk to the lifts. Commuting from Happo is 40-plus minutes on the valley bus each way.
After dark
Quiet, and English dinner is thinner than in Happo. No night skiing at Tsugaike in 2026–27.
Eat nearby
Mostly lodge dinners. Plan one taxi night to Happo or Echoland.
Mountains
Tsugaike

Best when Tsugaike is the kids-club hill and you want zero morning commute.

Skip when You want to try a different mountain every day without a car.

Cortina and Norikura コルチナ・乗鞍

PowderQuiet

Powder-first riders with a car, or a hotel-based holiday where you ski from the door and eat in.

Lifts
Hotel-based: stay at the base and walk out. One joint ticket covers both hills. The valley bus from Happo is infrequent, so without a car this is where you stay, not where you visit.
After dark
Hotel dinners and an onsen at the base (the Hakuba Alps Hotel bath at Norikura). Little else after dark.
Eat nearby
Eat at the hotel, or drive.
Mountains
Cortina, Norikura

Best when Snow and trees matter more than restaurants, and you have a car or never leave the hotel.

Skip when You want Echoland dinners without a designated driver.

Before you book

  • Search the area, not “Hakuba”. A listing that says ski-in in Otari is still a car mountain from Echoland.
  • Check the walk on a map. Happo and Echoland are close on paper; with kids and ski bags in snow, a few hundred metres matters.
  • Book peak weeks early. Christmas to mid-January is when Australian holidays meet Japanese New Year. See peak dates.
  • Ask if the lodge takes courier deliveries. That decides whether you can forward ski bags from Tokyo. See takkyubin.
  • Match the pass to the area. The Hakuba Valley pass makes the shuttle free on ski days, which is what makes Echoland and Hakuba Station work. See lift passes.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best area to stay in Hakuba?
For a first trip without a car, Happo village: you can walk to the Happo Gondola and to dinner, and most valley shuttle buses stop there. Echoland is the pick for nightlife, Wadano for a quieter family base, and Tsugaike or Iwatake if your kids are beginners on those hills.
Is Echoland a good place to stay in Hakuba?
Yes, if dinner and a drink matter. Echoland is the valley’s restaurant and bar village, on the Happo side of the valley. Most lodges are not on a lift, so you ride the shuttle or walk to Happo in the morning.
Can I stay in Hakuba without a car?
Yes. Stay in Happo, Echoland or Wadano and ski Happo, Iwatake or Goryu on the shuttle, which is free on ski days with the Hakuba Valley pass. Cortina, Norikura and the Omachi hills are car mountains.
Where should families stay in Hakuba?
Wadano or Happo if you want restaurants nearby, Tsugaike Kogen or Iwatake if the kids are true beginners and you want to walk to the learning area. Goryu works if the kids are in English group lessons at Iimori.
Should I stay near Hakuba Station?
If you arrive on the direct Azusa train from Shinjuku and plan to ride the bus every day, it is handy: you step off the train and walk to a station-area lodge. There are no lifts at the station; you will take the valley shuttle to the mountain each morning.
