The brochure sells “family mountain.” Your actual week is: a lodge you can walk from, a kids club that speaks English, a table that seats five at 18:00, and a night-ski ticket that is not on the all-mountain pass. Australians booking now for Dec–Jan should lock the school first. The hill is the second decision.
Stay where you can walk. Then pick the hill.
No car plus kids means Happo, Echoland, or Wadano. Most valley buses stop at Happo. Staying here makes the other hills easier, and dinner is walkable. Echoland is the after-dark village, still a shuttle or a short hop to Happo. Wadano sits on the Iwatake / Sakka side — quieter, still walkable to The Rabbit Hole and Tori Co. If the kids are in Evergreen at Tsugaike, stay in Tsugaike — not a Happo commute with a four-year-old.

Two bases (Toomi and Iimori) linked as one hill, plus the 47 connection on a valid ticket. Wider, more readable than Happo. English group lessons at Iimori via Hakuba Snow Sports. Good family default if you are based south.
Tsugaike scores family 5 and no-car 2 from Happo — it is a family hill if you live there. Goryu is family 4; English group lessons sit at Iimori via Hakuba Snow Sports, but dinner is thinner than Happo. Read the Which mountain and the no-car guide before you book a “ski-in” listing in Otari.
Trap: Norikura, Sanosaka, Jiigatake, Kashimayari all score family-friendly and no-car 1. Kashimayari is a family park, not a Happo-village stay. Skip them without a car.

Yeti Club lives at Happo Kokusai with Roots Cafe next door — useful lunch if you are not in the lesson. Heroes is 7–14, ski and snowboard. Book Evergreen 9–12 months out for Aussie school holidays. Dinner that seats five.
Gogh has eight seats. Sushi Sakai has ten at the counter. VIVE will do a child portion of a tasting menu, not a high-chair pizza night. For a family of five you want a room that already thinks in large tables. Kids-friendly tables.
- The Rabbit Hole ザ・ラビットホール
Wadano burger-and-coffee room 150 m from the Sakka slopes. Breakfast through dinner in winter, pool table, live music. Hakuba Hospitality Group. The default Wadano no-car dinner if you do not want yakitori.
- Tori Co. トリコ
Modern yakitori izakaya in Wadano, binchotan, wagyu and chicken shabu, chanko nabe. Family-style, slope-side, cashless. Opened winter 23-24. Book it.
- Calico キャリコ
Australian-run smash burgers, smoothie bowls, coffee, cocktails. Bali DNA, Echoland concrete and monsteras. Breakfast to late. Hours are 7am–late on their website — check the door for close time.
- Yamabuki Shokudo 山吹食堂
Big Happo hall, about 100 seats, built around Yamabuki miso and fermentation. Dinner 5–9. Lunch times disagree across listings — call if you want lunch. Useful when you need a table that actually fits a family of five.
- The Pub ザ・パブ
Happo's original English pub, now combined with Izakaya Kaz Japanese plates. Kids-ok, English staff. The default 'we just want a table and a beer' room in Happo village.
- Blizzard Pizza ブリザードピザ
Wood-fired pizza and pasta in Happo, 30 m from the Happo gondola. Vegetarian, kids, English staff. The family-table alternative to a tasting menu.
Yamabuki and The Pub have the big tables. We haven’t seen a published kids menu — book anyway in Aussie peak.
Night skiing
Night skiing is not on the all-mountain pass. Buy a separate ticket. Check hakubavalley.com for 2026–27. Goryu is the usual hill.
If you want night skiing, Goryu is the usual bet (Toomi and Iimori). Happo and Tsugaike have run nights some winters. Buy a separate night ticket at the window if night skiing is the plan — it is not on the valley day pass. The ski-day shuttle is a separate ticket too.

- Yes, if you stay in Happo, Echoland, or Wadano and treat Tsugaike as a stay-there hill, not a commute. Cortina, Norikura, Sanosaka, Jiigatake and Kashimayari are car mountains. A family of five plus ski bags is not a valley-shuttle lifestyle.
- Which English kids club actually exists?
