Best Hakuba

Car hire · winter 2026–27 · checked 11 Oct 2026

Car hire in Hakuba: tyres, 4WD, parking and your IDP.

Hakuba Valley has ten ski areas, and the buses link some of them far better than others. A car opens up the whole valley, but it brings winter driving, parking rules that change at dusk, and paperwork Australians need to sort before they fly. This page covers the car side. If you are deciding whether you need one at all, start with Hakuba without a car.

Best when

  • You want Cortina, Norikura or Tsugaike as well as Happo and Goryu.
  • You are a family with ski bags, boots and small kids.
  • Your lodge is off the bus routes, or you want onsens after dark.

Skip when

  • You stay in Happo or Echoland and ski Happo, Iwatake and Goryu.
  • No one in the group has driven on snow and ice before.
  • Your lodge has no parking: resort lots are closed overnight.

My pick

Personally I’d suggest renting in the valley rather than from Tokyo. Arrive by bus or train, pick up a 4WD with studless tyres at Hakuba Station or from a local firm that delivers, and hire it only for the days you want Cortina or Tsugaike. You skip the expressway in a snowstorm and you skip paying for a car that sits outside the lodge on Happo days.

Winter tyres and the law

On snow or ice, Nagano’s road traffic rules require chains or anti-skid tyres. The prefecture’s winter notice gives the penalty as a fine of up to ¥50,000, or an on-the-spot ¥6,000 for an ordinary car, and it has said plainly that driving on summer tyres in snow breaks the law.

You rarely have to ask. Hakuba Rent a Car and Hakuba Station Car Rental fit studless tyres to every car in winter at no extra charge (Hakuba Rent a Car says December to March). Toyota Rent a Car’s Nagano branches fit them as standard from 1 Dec to 31 Mar, at the seasonal rate. If you rent elsewhere in Japan and drive in, check the booking says studless tyres, not just “winter package”.

In exceptional snowfall, Japan’s road ministry can impose a chain regulation on set mountain sections, and then even studless tyres need chains. It is rare, but if you are driving in from Tokyo or Osaka during a big storm, check the road reports and ask the rental desk for chains.

Where to rent

Local and national options, winter 2026–27
WhoWhat you getPrice we could verify
Hakuba Rent a CarKei, compact and minivan; all 4WD; studless Dec–Mar; ski carrier (up to 4 boards or 6 pairs of skis); delivery in the valleyKei car ¥11,000 per 24 h. 10% off 3+ days, 20% off 7+ days in Dec–Mar. Delivery ¥3,000 each way in Hakuba and Otari
Hakuba Station Car RentalBy JR Hakuba Station; all 4WD; winter tyres standard; ski carriers and child seats; English supportSee the operator for winter rates
Toyota Rent a Car (Nagano branches)Studless standard 1 Dec – 31 Mar at the seasonal rateSee the operator

Check the damage cover before you sign. Hakuba Rent a Car’s rate includes liability insurance but not the car itself: its option B (¥3,300 a day) leaves you paying the first ¥100,000, and option C (¥5,500 a day) removes that excess and the non-operation charge of ¥55,000–110,000 that otherwise applies after an accident. Child seats are ¥1,100 per 24 hours, and Japanese law requires them for children under six.

4WD or not

Japanese law asks for the right tyres, not four-wheel drive. That said, both local firms we checked rent only 4WD cars, so in Hakuba it is the default rather than an upgrade. It helps most on unploughed lodge driveways and on the climbs up to Cortina and Norikura after a dump. A small kei car is easy on narrow lanes but carries about two suitcases; a group with ski bags wants a minivan or a roof carrier.

Parking at each ski area

Day parking, from each resort's own pages
Ski areaDay parkingOvernight
Happo-one6 free lots, about 1,100 cars. Gondola lots A, B, C: ¥1,000 a dayNo parking 18:00–6:00 in winter (snow clearing)
GoryuAbout 1,500 free spacesNo overnight parking at any Goryu or Iimori lot; P1 and P2 closed 23:00–5:00
Iwatake4 free lots, including about 1,000 cars in front of the gondola24-hour entry except on some dates
TsugaikeCentral and first lots free on weekdays, ¥1,000 a day on some winter dates; second lot freeCentral and first lots: no overnight. Second lot: overnight allowed
NorikuraAbout 1,000 free day spaces on the Wakaguri sideOpen 24 hours

Overnight bans are about snow ploughing, and they are enforced. Choose lodging with its own parking; where to stay compares the bases. We couldn’t verify current Cortina parking details on its own site, so check there before you go.

The IDP for Australians

You need an International Driving Permit carried with your Australian licence. The Australian Embassy in Tokyo says an IDP lets you drive for up to 365 days after you first enter Japan, as long as you are a visitor rather than a resident.

The AAA is the only body that issues IDPs in Australia, through the state clubs (NRMA, RACV, RACQ and the rest). It costs $55, is valid for 12 months from issue or until your licence expires, and you need your licence and a passport-style photo. The NRMA says online orders are posted within about 3–5 business days, and it can issue on the spot at its Sydney Olympic Park office. Get it before you fly: your Australian licence on its own doesn’t let you drive in Japan.

Driving in from Tokyo or Osaka

If you do rent at the airport, plan on a long expressway day and check the forecast. From Osaka the bus route alone is about 470 km; the rail and bus alternatives are on Osaka to Hakuba, and the Tokyo options on getting to Hakuba.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need a car in Hakuba?
Not if you stay in Happo, Echoland or Wadano and ski Happo, Iwatake and Goryu. A car earns its keep if you want Cortina, Norikura or Tsugaike on the same trip, are a family with lots of gear, or are staying somewhere the buses don't reach. The no-car side of that decision is on our no-car guide.
Are winter tyres compulsory in Hakuba?
On snowy or icy roads, yes. Nagano's road traffic rules require chains or anti-skid (studless) tyres on snow or ice; the prefecture's notice puts the on-the-spot penalty at ¥6,000 for an ordinary car. Hakuba rental firms fit studless tyres to every car from December to March at no extra cost, and Toyota Rent a Car's Nagano branches do the same from 1 Dec to 31 Mar.
Can Australians drive in Japan on their licence?
Only with an International Driving Permit carried alongside your Australian licence. The Australian Embassy in Tokyo says you can drive on an IDP for up to 365 days after first entering Japan. In Australia the AAA issues IDPs through the state motoring clubs for $55, valid for 12 months.
Do I need 4WD in Hakuba?
It isn't a legal requirement, but the local rental firms we checked rent only 4WD cars, and on lodge driveways and the climb to Cortina or Norikura in fresh snow it makes life easier. Studless tyres matter more than the drive type.
Is ski-area parking free in Hakuba?
Mostly. Happo's six resort lots (about 1,100 cars) are free, with three paid lots by the gondola at ¥1,000 a day. Goryu has 1,500 free spaces, Iwatake four free lots, and Norikura a 1,000-car free day lot. Tsugaike's central and first lots are free on weekdays and ¥1,000 a day on some winter dates. Overnight parking is banned at most lots for snow clearing.
