Wadano — the Iwatake base

Wadano 和田野 sits north of Happo village, on the Iwatake side. If you're staying Wadano and skiing Iwatake, you walk to the gondola. No-car reality: Wadano is quieter than Happo or Echoland. Walk to The Rabbit Hole (burgers, breakfast through dinner) or Tori Co. (modern yakitori izakaya). Mimi's at Phoenix Hotel is the special-occasion Italian tasting menu.

Who should stay Wadano: families who want Iwatake as the hill, quieter after-dark than Echoland, still walkable to lodges and dinner. From Happo or Echoland you still want the valley shuttle to reach Iwatake — not a short walk with kids.

Skip when: your group wants Happo's night scene or a ten-minute walk to fifteen restaurants. Wadano is the hill's base, not a party village.

    The 1998 Olympic hill and the village's default mountain. Steep upper faces, a long alpine traverse, and a base that dumps you into Happo restaurants. Best if you want to walk to dinner. Worst if your group is all first-day rentals looking for a wide nursery.

    Two bases (Toomi and Iimori) linked as one hill, plus the 47 connection on a valid ticket. Wider, more readable than Happo. English group lessons at Iimori via Hakuba Snow Sports. Good family default if you are based south.

    The powder hill people mean when they say they came for snow, not for a village. Tree shots, a park, and a quieter base. Hakuba Ski Concierge runs private English from here. Linked to Goryu.

    Iwatake 岩岳

    Family hill, gondola, stay Wadano. North of Happo, so Wadano/Iwatake stays make more sense than Echoland.

    Tsugaike 栂池

    Giant beginner and family area at the north end of the valley, plus a high plateau that becomes a different mountain in a storm. Evergreen runs a Tsugaike base. Stay here if this is your hill — do not commute from Happo every morning with small kids.

    Cortina コルチナ

    Otari, not Hakuba village. Snowier, quieter, hotel-centric. The day you go when Happo is blown off and you want trees. Stay at the hotel or hire a car. From Happo the bus is infrequent — a planned day, not a pop-over.

    Onsen resort next to Cortina. Mellow, snowy, local. Pair with Cortina on a storm swing. Not the mountain you pick if you are staying in Echoland without a car.

    South of the main village in Omachi. White Resort hotel base, readable terrain, fewer foreigners. A day trip if you have the all-mountain pass and a car, not a no-car village stay.

    Omachi family hill at the far south of the pass. The all-mountain pass is valid, but the IC card often needs exchanging at the window. Treat it as a curiosity day, not your base.

    Family park more than a ski destination. Free-under-3 rules on the valley pass differ here (under 3, not under 6). Only go if you have small kids, a car, and a rest day.
