When to go · 2026–27 dates checked 11 Oct 2026

Hakuba’s winter runs from the first December openings to Golden Week on the high hills, but the snow, the prices and the crowds all peak at different times. This page sets thirty years of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) normals for Hakuba village next to the resorts’ published 2026–27 dates, so you can choose your week. For the exact holiday clashes, see peak dates.

Best when

  • Mid to late January: the coldest, snowiest weeks of the winter.
  • February outside Lunar New Year week, for the deepest snowpack.
  • Early March for sun, a full base and quieter lifts.

Skip when

  • Christmas to New Year if you haven't booked lodging and lessons.
  • Early December if your trip can't move: openings depend on snow.
  • April if you want the whole valley: the lower hills wind down.

My pick

Personally I’d suggest the last week of January. The Australian school holidays are over, the New Year rush is long gone, Lunar New Year hasn’t arrived, and on the JMA normals it is the coldest stretch of the year in the valley. If that clashes with work, early March is my second choice: a deep base, more sunshine and peak prices about to drop.

Snow and weather, by month

JMA 1991–2020 normals for the Hakuba weather station in the village at 703 m. The resorts climb well above that and get more snow; use this to compare months, not to promise a powder day.

Month by month

December

The valley averages 130 cm of snowfall in December, but the village base is still thin (46 cm deepest on average), so early-December openings are partial and snow-dependent. Happo’s early-season price runs to 18 Dec. From 19 Dec the peak season starts, and Christmas to New Year is the busiest stretch of the winter.

January

The snowiest month on the normals: 216 cm of snowfall and an average low of −7.2°C in the village, with the least sunshine of the season. The first week is still New Year busy and Australian families stay through most of the month; it eases once school goes back late in January.

February

Snowfall eases a little (174 cm) but the snowpack is at its deepest, 97 cm on average in the village and far more on the hill. Lunar New Year on 6 Feb 2027 brings a busy week. Outside that week, February weekdays are a good bet.

March

Still 110 cm of snowfall on average, with 137 hours of sunshine against 71 in January. Happo’s peak price ends on 22 Mar. With the Australian holidays over, the valley is usually calmer than in January. Norikura switches to the Wakaguri side only from 22 Mar.

April and Golden Week

Village snow is mostly gone (7 cm of April snowfall on average, mean 7.6°C), so this is spring skiing up high. Norikura is planned to close on 4 Apr; Happo’s spring season runs to 5 May. Cheap, sunny, slushy by afternoon.

Rest days

Whatever the month, a stormy or icy day is a good day for the snow monkeys or an onsen. Book your base early for the peak weeks on where to stay.
