Ski & snowboard hire.

Village shops with shuttles, Happo counters, and resort desks thirty steps from the snow.

Rentals · Checked for 2026–27, 27 Sep 2026

Hakuba Valley runs ten resorts and a thick rental market — village shops with shuttles, Happo counters, and resort-run desks thirty steps from the snow. Book ahead for peak weeks; day-before pickup beats a powder-morning queue.

Prices and swap rules differ more than the headline day rate. Confirm hours and stock on each shop's site before you rely on a walk-in.

Best when

  • • You want day-before fitting so day one starts on snow
  • • You need kids sizes, English staff, or a lodging shuttle
  • • You hop Happo / Goryu / Tsugaike and may swap gear mid-week
  • • You left hardgoods at home and need boots that actually fit

Skip when

  • • You already fly with boots and a board you trust
  • • You only have one evening and no time to fit before dinner
  • • You expect every shop to rent goggles and gloves (many won't)
  • • You pick on price alone without checking swap and shuttle rules

Before you book

  • • Pre-book for late December through February — walk-in stock thins out
  • • Collect from 13:00–15:00 the day before when the shop offers it
  • • Helmets and outerwear are usually add-ons, not in the base package
  • • Damage cover and ski↔board swap rules vary — read the shop FAQ

8 shops. Hours are a guide — confirm on the shop site before you go.

  • Widest published demo fleet in the valley — three stores, free shuttle, gear collected from your chalet on the last day. Best when you want one free ski↔board swap and no-car logistics sorted. Skip when you only need a cheap day set next to one lift.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need to book Hakuba ski hire in advance?
Yes for Christmas–New Year, Chinese New Year, and most of January–February — especially demo, powder boards, large boots, and kids sizes. Quieter weeks can walk in, but online booking still locks sizes and often unlocks early-bird discounts.
Can I swap between skis and a snowboard mid-hire?
Depends on the shop. Rhythm and SPICY publish unlimited free swaps. Central includes one free swap. GORYU Rentals charges ¥2,000 per change. Ask before you pay if you chase powder one day and groomers the next.
Should I rent near where I sleep or where I ski?
Rent near where you sleep if the shop has a shuttle or day-before pickup. Sleeping in Echoland and renting only at Tsugaike without transfers wastes mornings. Multi-shop operators (SPICY, Woody, Central) make valley hopping easier.
What should I bring vs rent?
Bring goggles, gloves, base layers, and ski socks — many shops will not rent the first two for hygiene. Rent board or skis, boots, bindings, and outerwear if you are not flying with a bag of hardgoods.
