Hakuba without a car is Happo. Everything else is a schedule.
You can have a proper week here without an International Driving Permit. You cannot have every mountain. The village you sleep in is the decision. The all-mountain pass is not a taxi. Happo is the walk-everywhere base. Live shuttle times: this year’s PDF on hakubavalley.com.

The working pattern
01 · Sleep Happo or Echoland
Happo-one is walk-everywhere: walk to the gondola, walk to dinner, most valley buses call here. Echoland is the night village — Calico, VIVE, Hige, Sounds Like — still on the Happo side of the map. This is the default for Australians who will not drive. See Eat tonight for Happo and Echoland.
02 · Wadano if Iwatake is the hill
Iwatake is the family mountain — doable on a timetable. Wadano puts you 150 m from Sakka and The Rabbit Hole. From Happo village, take the shuttle to Iwatake — it is not a short walk from Echoland with kids. Hakuba with kids.
03 · Goryu / 47 on a timed shuttle
Goryu is doable on a timetable, not casual. English group lessons at Iimori via Hakuba Snow Sports. Hakuba 47 is thin shuttle — powder hill, dinner is not the base. Pair 47 with Goryu or stay nearby. Night skiing is not on the all-mountain pass. Buy a separate ticket. Check hakubavalley.com for 2026–27. Goryu is the usual hill.
04 · Tsugaike is a stay, not a commute
Thin shuttle from Happo. Budget 40-plus minutes on the valley shuttle. Evergreen has a second base here. If this is the kids-club hill, live in Tsugaike Kogen. English dinner is thinner. Official Tsugaike school is Japanese-only.
Car mountains · skip
These are car mountains — book them only with a car.
- Cortina — From Happo without a car this is a long, timed bus day. Don’t count on popping over.
- Norikura — Same access problem as Cortina.
- Sanosaka — Don’t try this without a car.
- Jiigatake — Valley pass is valid, but you often swap the IC card at the window — ask when you buy.
- Kashimayari — Kashimayari is a family park in Omachi. You need a car. Don’t book it as your Hakuba stay.
Borderline without a car: Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike. Possible as a day with a committed timetable. Not a “we will figure it out at 08:00” plan.
Shuttle reality
- Most valley buses stop at Happo. Live shuttle PDF: hakubavalley.com.
- The ski-day shuttle is not a night-ski ticket. Separate things. Night skiing is not on the all-mountain pass. Buy a separate ticket. Check hakubavalley.com for 2026–27. Goryu is the usual hill.
- Frequency dies at the north (Cortina / Norikura) and south (Omachi hills). Missing the last bus is a taxi, and taxis in a Hakuba whiteout are not a Melbourne Uber.
- Echoland dinner plus first chair at Cortina is how people rent a car on day three. Drink in Echoland; sleep in Happo; ski Happo.
Getting into the valley is separate — bus, shuttle, rail, and which Tokyo airport: highway bus vs shuttle vs rail, and Narita or Haneda. Once you are here, walk or timetable. If you later want Cortina on a storm day, that is a one-day car or a committed shuttle — not a reason to move the whole family to Otari.
Dinner without a designated driver
Happo and Echoland win. Wadano if you live there (Rabbit Hole, Tori Co.). Goryu has NABURA as a winter locals' bar — useful, not a substitute for Echoland. Vegan constraint: stay Happo/Echoland and read the diet page. Family of five: kids-friendly tables.

Search Happo, not “Hakuba”.

- Can you ski Hakuba Valley without a car?
- Yes, if your base is Happo, Echoland or Wadano and your hill is Happo, Iwatake or Goryu on the shuttle. No, if Cortina, Norikura, Sanosaka, Jiigatake or Kashimayari is the plan. Tsugaike works if you stay there.
- Is the valley shuttle a free unlimited hop?
- Treat it as a timetable, not a metro. Most valley buses stop at Happo. Happo to Tsugaike is 40-plus minutes. Cortina does not run often. Night dinner in Echoland and a first chair at Cortina are not the same day.
